<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Dr. Allen Friedman said he always refuses rental car insurance because he’s already covered. So what happened at Dollar Rent a Car left him ready for a fight. ”This is not what I asked for and I will not let it go,” said Friedman. His final bill included a $215 insurance charge and he said Dollar would not remove it. Friedman said he could not believe it. ”Something just isn’t right here,” he said. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Action 9 searched BBB complaints nationwide and checked with the Florida Attorney General to uncover hundreds of consumers who claim the same thing happened to them. Dollar had more complaints than other rental companies. At least 30 of the complaints were from customers at Orlando International Airport, including Daniel Ringleben. ”I will never use them again,” said Ringleben. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Many consumers said Dollar’s electronic tablet was hard to read and they assumed they declined coverage. It’s not just small screens but tiny print. The printout receipt takes very sharp eyesight to see.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Jamal Powell had worked at Dollar’s Tampa office handling customer service and says every day angry customers claimed they were burned for extra <del></del>fees. ”If you get 40 or 50 customers a week you can’ put it past some employees doing that,” said Powell.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Allen Friedman sued Dollar in Colorado, and in Florida the <del></del>attorney general is investigating the company for unfair and deceptive trade.  The company said it could not comment on pending litigation but denies allegations that it sells products customers don’t want and said it will defend itself vigorously. We had a volunteer rent a Dollar car. She who declined insurance and she was not charged.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">SACRAMENTO — Legislation that aims to end surprise hefty bills for using credit or debit cards at pay phones appears to be on course to reach Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The measure — growing in part out of litigation involving a San Diego area company and military troops using pay phones at an airport in Germany — unanimously passed the Senate last week.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Supporters acknowledge that any new warning requirements would not be enforceable in other states or countries. But they hope it will inspire similar laws.</span></p>

<p id="h714758-p4"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Senate Bill 50 would require pay phone owners to post the true costs of using a credit or debit card. They also would have to offer a toll-free number for questions.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p5"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">“This is not regulation; it’s information,” said San Diego-based attorney John Mattes, a bill supporter who was on the losing end of litigation seeking to challenge pay phone operators over their charges.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p6"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Mattes was representing service members who said they were time- and cash-strapped during a stopover in Leipzig, Germany on the way to and from Iraq and Afghanistan. So they used credit or debit cards, unwittingly racking up hefty bills of as much as $41 per minute.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p7"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">His target was Otay Mesa’s BBG Communications and BBG Global, which provided credit card processing, operator assistance and other services under a contract with the German pay phone owner, avanticom.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p8"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Avanticom and BBG successfully argued that the company was in compliance with all applicable German laws and did provide troops with a numerical prompt for detailed information on charges before dialing.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p9"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">“Rates are always disclosed in some fashion for any pay phones where a BBG entity provides the operator service,” the company’s attorney, Fred Puglisi of Los Angeles, said in an interview Friday. He did not comment on the pending legislation.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p10"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Disclosure would help all consumers, said state Sen. Ted Lieu, a Torrance Democrat who is carrying the bill.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p11"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">“Many consumers have no idea a domestic pay phone call could cost $20 for 20 seconds,” Lieu said. “Taking advantage of people who are stranded because of plane delays or bad weather, or troops in areas with no cellphone service, is unfair and unreasonable.”</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p12"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Lieu said his bill would close a loophole in existing state law that requires pay phone operators to only post what it costs for a cash or calling-card call.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p13"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">“This can be misleading because it’ll say something like ‘local calls, 50 cents,’” Lieu said,</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p14"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Pay phones have been largely replaced by mobile devices, but there are still about 30,000 in California, according to a bill analysis.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p15"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">“Pay phones still offer a vital means of communication for persons without wireless service, especially in airports, hospitals and other public places,” the analysis states.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p16"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Public Utilities Commission and a coalition of airports are among supporters.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p17"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Vietnam Veterans of America, in a letter to lawmakers, said the measure “would be very beneficial to the active duty members of the military who use these pay phones to keep in touch with loved ones while traveling.”</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p18"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">There is no registered opposition from any of the pay phone operators.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p19"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The measure now goes to the Assembly. Brown has not taken a position.</span></p>
<p id="h714758-p20"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">It would go into effect Jan. 1, 2015 to provide operators time to comply.</span></p>

After landing, he went to the Thrifty rental counter to pick up the car reserved by his employer.  &#8221;I said &#8216;I don&#8217;t want the damage waiver because I am covered by my insurance and by my credit card,&#8217;&#8221; Roberts recalled telling the Thrifty employee.  </span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Before leaving with the car, Roberts said he asked the employee again to make sure he wouldn&#8217;t be charged for the extra insurance coverage.  Roberts said, &#8220;OK this does not include damage waiver, correct?&#8221; She said, &#8220;No, it does not.&#8221;</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">After the trip, Roberts was surprised to find a $135 charge for loss damage waiver. Roberts said he called Thrifty twice to dispute the charge, but the calls got him nowhere.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">A class action lawsuit filed in November against Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group spells out similar stories from other consumers. The lawsuit covers a broad range of renters, including:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">A doctor in Denver was charged by Dollar an extra $215 for insurance coverage</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">A senior citizen in California got a bill for $359</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">A retired insurance adjuster who handled claims for another rental car company was charged an extra $259</span></li>

<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><em>PHILADELPHIA (CBS) –</em> Finding a deal when renting a car isn’t always easy, but some customers may be driving away thinking they’re getting one only to be hit with extra charges when they bring their rental car back! 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan explains.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">“I do not want insurance, no insurance. I have coverage through Visa, I have coverage through State Farm, I don’t need any insurance,” she says she told the company.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Sandra reserved her car online and expected to pay around $500 for a week. But when she returned the car at the end of her trip, the total bill was nearly double: $944! Sandra had been charged additionally for what’s known as “loss damage waiver,” a product that works like insurance and covers you if the car is stolen or damaged.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">The scenario sounds familiar to Brenda Turchi of Drexel Hill. Brenda says that when she rented a car from Dollar in Jacksonville and was offered insurance, she declined it.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><em>“I told them no, I said absolutely not.”</em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">But after dropping the car off at the end of her rental, she too got an unwelcome surprise — an extra $242 charge. She says, “For extra for insurance that I didn’t want.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">When her husband Pat complained to Dollar, he says, “I said, ‘well, we didn’t ask for insurance,’ they said, ‘yes you did.’”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">In fact, there are hundreds of complaints about unauthorized charges by Dollar Rental. “The scenario is that each and every consumer we talked to has verbally declined the insurance, yet they find it on their bill when they return the car,” says attorney John Mattes, who has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of Dollar customers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">According to Mattes, “We’re alleging that Dollar Rental car has systematically defrauded consumers all over the United States by overcharging them for insurance and other add-ons.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">And Mattes says the same allegations apply to Dollar’s sister company, Thrifty.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">While their paperwork indicates that both women accepted the coverage when they picked up their cars, Mattes argues that language in the rental contracts is often confusing and no matter whether customers are signing a paper document or using an electronic device to sign, it’s difficult to read. Mattes says, “The electronic pads are small,” adding, “In each and every instance when we look at the contracts that have been provided to us by consumers, the print is tiny, the ink is faded. Is this just an accident?”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Hertz, the parent company of both Dollar and Thrifty, tells 3 On Your Side that it doesn’t discuss pending lawsuits, only saying that it intends to “fight the claims vigorously.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">So, this is yet another example of why it’s important to always check your paperwork. Brenda says, “Read everything on that paper, absolutely everything.”</span></p>

But before you sign the dotted line, there are some things you should be aware of about renting a car. A lawsuit claims overcharges by Dollar Rent A Car. The confusion is over something called the collision damage waiver. The suit goes on to claim that even though customers state clearly they don’t want the pricey option to have the rental car company cover potential damage, they’re being charged nearly $25 a day anyway. In an email to the I-Team, the company denies those allegations and says they intend to fight them vigorously.</span></p>

So she made sure the Dollar Rent a Car clerk with the friendly, back-home demeanor knew she did not want any coverage. “She went back to her big screen, which I could not see, and she clickety-clickety-clicked,” said Ms. McKinnon, a 66-year-old retired nurse practitioner. Then, as the clerk instructed, Ms. McKinnon signed her name on the electronic tablet.</span></p>
<p itemprop="articleBody"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">But 15 days later, when she returned the silver <a title="" href="http://autos.nytimes.com/2011/Ford/Focus/245/2790/326443/researchOverview.aspx?inline=nyt-classifier">Ford Focus</a>, Ms. McKinnon said she was handed a bill for $944, nearly twice what she expected to pay. She was charged an extra $23.95 a day for the <a href="http://carinsurance.about.com/od/CarRentalGlossary/g/Collision-Damage-Waiver-Cdw-Or-Loss-Damage-Waiver-Ldw.htm">loss damage waiver</a>, an option that isn’t technically <a href="http://www.dollar.com/%CB%9C/media/dollar/files/corporateroadmap/dolpeaceofmindbroc.ashx">insurance</a>, but that generally “waives” the renter’s responsibility for loss or damage to the vehicle.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Consumers allege that Dollar Rent A Car / Thrifty Car Rental overcharges renters with hidden fees. According to consumers, Dollar/ Thrifty employees get consumers to sign a pad for optional insurance even after consumers state they the decline coverage The added costs can amount to up to $50 a day on top of the rental charge. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Consumers assume that since they have told the agent they decline the insurance, that any signatures would reflect that. However, consumers have reported that what they are signing does not correspond to what the agents are telling them.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Consumers allege that when they return cars and check out they find hundreds of dollars in insurance charges tacked on.</span></p>

<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><a href="http://autos.aol.com/article/dollar-rent-a-car-rental-insurance-consumers/" target="_blank"><img class="alignright  wp-image-2098" style="margin: 2px;" alt="AOL Autos Breaking News" src="http://i1.wp.com/www.investigativeguy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/aol-logo-ads.png?resize=266%2C50" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a>Dollar Rent A Car has been charging customers for insurance they never intended to buy, a prominent consumer lawyer alleges.  </span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">At least 100 customers said they verbally declined buying insurance at the rental car counter, but charges for the insurance nonetheless showed up on their final bill, California-based lawyer John Mattes told The New York Times.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Two lawsuits, which may be combined into a class-action case, have been filed against the parent company, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, alleging the company engaged in deceptive business practices. A spokesperson tells The Times the company will &#8220;vigorously&#8221; defend itself.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Here&#8217;s the crux of the problem: In most of the cases, customers say they verbally declined insurance, including the loss-damage waiver. But they signed for their cars on an electronic tablet, on which they couldn&#8217;t confirm whether employees actually followed their verbal requests.  </span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">The first inkling something was amiss came when they returned the cars – and were billed for the coverage.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">In other cases, they had agreed to the loss-damage waiver, believing that they were waiving insurance when they were actually accepting the coverage.  </span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Sandra McKinnon tells The Times she received a bill for $944, nearly twice what she expected, for the 15-day rental of a Ford Focus. She had been charged $23.95 per day for accepting the loss-damage waiver.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">&#8220;I was instantly furious,&#8221; she tells the newspaper. </span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Most of the complaints involve experiences at Dollar Rent A Car, although a few involve cases at Thrifty, which is owned by the same company.</span><br />

But before you sign the dotted line, there are some things you should be aware of about renting a car. A lawsuit claims overcharges by Dollar Rent A Car. The confusion is over something called the collision damage waiver. The suit goes on to claim that even though customers state clearly they don’t want the pricey option to have the rental car company cover potential damage, they’re being charged nearly $25 a day anyway. In an email to the I-Team, the company denies those allegations and says they intend to fight them vigorously.</span></p>

So she made sure the Dollar Rent a Car clerk with the friendly, back-home demeanor knew she did not want any coverage. “She went back to her big screen, which I could not see, and she clickety-clickety-clicked,” said Ms. McKinnon, a 66-year-old retired nurse practitioner. Then, as the clerk instructed, Ms. McKinnon signed her name on the electronic tablet.</span></p>
<p itemprop="articleBody"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">But 15 days later, when she returned the silver <a title="" href="http://autos.nytimes.com/2011/Ford/Focus/245/2790/326443/researchOverview.aspx?inline=nyt-classifier">Ford Focus</a>, Ms. McKinnon said she was handed a bill for $944, nearly twice what she expected to pay. She was charged an extra $23.95 a day for the <a href="http://carinsurance.about.com/od/CarRentalGlossary/g/Collision-Damage-Waiver-Cdw-Or-Loss-Damage-Waiver-Ldw.htm">loss damage waiver</a>, an option that isn’t technically <a href="http://www.dollar.com/%CB%9C/media/dollar/files/corporateroadmap/dolpeaceofmindbroc.ashx">insurance</a>, but that generally “waives” the renter’s responsibility for loss or damage to the vehicle.</span></p>

According to consumers, Dollar/ Thrifty employees get consumers to sign a pad for optional insurance even after consumers state they the decline coverage The added costs can amount to up to $50 a day on top of the rental charge. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Consumers assume that since they have told the agent they decline the insurance, that any signatures would reflect that. However, consumers have reported that what they are signing does not correspond to what the agents are telling them.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Consumers allege that when they return cars and check out they find hundreds of dollars in insurance charges tacked on.</span></p>

<p>We may even end up running down the scammer with our cameras as we did in the clip above. We caught the car dealer taking in used cars, but not paying off the loans. That is just one of the scams car dealers use to defraud consumers every year.</p>
<p>Here are some of our favorite auto dealer tricks:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Hidden fees</strong> &#8211; This scam is one most people know of but often overlook. The dealer tacks on “administrative fees” for “prepping” paint, sealant, etc. The fees are bogus &#8211; but many dealers will try to add them.</li>
<li><strong>Insurance</strong> &#8211; In this scam the dealers try to tack on insurance polices, such as gap insurance or credit insurance. Don’t fall for it. If you want insurance, shop around.</li>
<li><strong>Dealer financing</strong> &#8211; Every dealer has a pitch for zero interest to finance a car, but few people ever qualify for such a rate. It is far better to shop around for financing, not at the dealership, where dealers love to bury financing terms in the back of a contract.</li>
<li><strong>Payment schemes</strong> &#8211; Every dealer loves to tell consumers he can get the consumer in a car for a certain amount every month. Watch out. You want to know the price of the car, not how much the dealer will get from you every month. Often you get a low monthly rate, only to discover the loan is for 72 months.</li>
<li><strong>Sticker schemes</strong> &#8211; Here the dealer shows you the sticker price, but fails to tell you how much he gets back from the car company on the sale, or if there are consumer incentives offered by the factory.</li>
<li><strong>Financing call backs</strong> &#8211; Dealers love to call consumers back days after they buy a car, and tell them the financing fell through. They then lure the consumer back into the dealership and hustle the consumer into more pricey financing.</li>
<li><strong>Wrecked cars</strong> &#8211; Yes dealers love to sell “salvaged” wrecked cars and lie about it to consumers. Watch out &#8211; demand a honest car history of any car you buy used. Carfax is a good place to start. Also watch out for rental cars being sold as &#8220;only slightly used&#8221;.</li>
</ul>
<p>So, bottom line: be careful ,and be ready to fight back if scammed. If you have been ripped off, contact us. We investigate.</p>

<p>When you see the Fonz peddling the safety of reverse mortgages, you know seniors are in trouble.  And it isn’t just the Fonz . On late night TV you can’t miss former Senator Fred Thompson also pushing reverse mortgages.</p>

<p>Reverse mortgages were designed to let seniors take principal out of their homes and were supposed to include safeguards,  but seniors are losing their homes to con men. The swindlers’ sales pitches promise seniors they’ll never have to pay a penny, but that is a lie. Reverse mortgages have insurance fees and taxes. Seniors who don’t make these payments could lose their homes.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Who is protecting our seniors? This week the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sent out letters to a number of mortgage firms questioning their advertisements.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>“Misrepresentations in mortgage products can deprive consumers of important information while making one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives,” said Richard Cordray,  Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.</p>
<p>&#8220;Baiting consumers with false ads to buy into mortgage products would be illegal. We will conduct a fair and rigorous investigation into these issues and will take appropriate action for any violations we find.”</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Meanwhile the TV and print ads continue to target seniors. Government investigators are responding, but for many, it will be too late. The damage has  been done. Many have lost their homes and the con men are long gone.</p>

The obvious scams, such as fake web sites asking for donations, are easy to spot, but the ones that will really hurt storm victims are less obvious and  much more troublesome.The real scams that will pick the pockets of Sandy’s victims are the legal ones by the insurance industry and its allies.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The first perpetrators on the scene to shortchange storm victims are the insurance companies themselves. They will be smiling and reassuring and all the while  hoping that victims will settle for the first check offered them. The first check  classically will be the smallest one, so victims need to take a deep breath and say no thank you. The companies are hoping storm-shocked victims will not comprehend their true loss and will settle on the spot for a hug and a check for pennies on what they are owed.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>You need to document their losses. Take pictures of every item that is storm- damaged and do not throw away damaged items. Insurance companies may later ask for proof in the form of receipts for the items and/or the actual items.</p>
<p>You need to read their polices to see what is covered and what is not. You have to read the fine print as to whether your policy covers full replacement at current value.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>You also have to know what kinds of damage coverage you have. Look out, as many victims will not have flood insurance  and insurance companies will try to tell them their homes were damaged by a flood, not a hurricane. Be ready to fight.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you have to fight the insurance company, there are many people who will offer to help you, for a fee. With every disaster, public adjusters appear on the scene ready to represent victims in exchange for a percentage of the settlement. Be very very careful with public adjusters. Screen them for their experience. Most importantly, find out how long they have been in business and how many cases they have handled. Remember &#8211; they make money by quick settlements and thus want as many clients as possible to settle quickly, which can short-change consumers. Be sure you do your homework before you sign anything.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Another avenue homeowners may want to consider is hiring an independent appraiser. While they charge an upfront fee, they can provide you an objective and documented appraisal of your damaged items. With the appraisal, you will be prepared for any low-ball estimates the insurance company gives you regarding the worth of your belongings.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Bottom line, get ready to fight for what is yours.</p>

<h3>Help for Homeowners</h3>
<p>UPDATE AUG  30  Today a report was released indicating  that the  banks have actually helped over 130,000 homeowners with over  $10.5 billion in  relief. So read on and take action now!</p>
<p>Yes, there really is hope for underwater homeowners and for families that lost their homes in foreclosure. It may sound hard to believe but it’s true that there are banks out there that do want to help America’s families. Banks have finally agreed to help homeowners in distress.</p>
<p>Before you run out and hug a bank official, a word of context. Banks are not reaching out to homeowners out of community good will. Many have faced nationwide investigation and litigation by state and federal authorities, and they are reaching out in order to settle the cases.</p>
<p>So here is how it works. As part of the court settlement, Bank of America has mailed out letters to 200,000 homeowners offering mortgage modifications. To qualify, homeowners must be 60 days behind in payments, be employed and the home must be underwater. The 11 billion dollar program is real, but sadly, many homeowners who have received the letters think it is all a scam and have not responded. After all, who trusts a letter from the bank? The result is that many homeowners are missing out on an incredible opportunity . Also other banks are part of the deal so you need to check with your bank.Ally, Bank of America, Citi, Chase and Wells Fargo are banks that also are  now part of the  program</p>
<p>Another program that many have also ignored is a program that provides an independent review of foreclosures. Remember robo-signing of foreclosures and the stories of banks improperly foreclosing on homes? Well the stories were true. Again, in a settlement with authorities, banks have agreed to conduct an independent review of foreclosures done between 2009 and 2010. If the review finds there were errors in the foreclosure, a family who lost their home can get compensation. The free program is open until September 30, 2012.<br />
As with many other so-called homeowner help programs, this program has been only utilized by a few, as most families do not believe anything they get from their bank. Who can blame them?</p>
<p>So bottom line, take a leap of faith and at least try out the programs. There is nothing to lose and perhaps there is money to be gained. Take my word and try it. Remember, though, only go to the real websites and to the banks directly. You might be pleasantly surprised.  Bottom line there is $25 billion out there to help you.</p>

But before you sign the dotted line, there are some things you should be aware of about renting a car. A lawsuit claims overcharges by Dollar Rent A Car. The confusion is over something called the collision damage waiver. The suit goes on to claim that even though customers state clearly they don&#8217;t want the pricey option to have the rental car company cover potential damage, they&#8217;re being charged nearly $25 a day anyway. In an email to the I-Team, the company denies those allegations and says they intend to fight them vigorously.</span></p>

He says customers think when they sign the loss damage waiver, they&#8217;re saying no they don&#8217;t want the coverage when in fact they are saying yes. What do you do if you believe you&#8217;ve been charged for an add-on that you didn&#8217;t want? You should go straight to the rental car company and ask for your money back, and report it to your credit card company &#8212; although in this case you may not have much luck. If the system shows your signature of approval, the credit card company might not get involved in a he said &#8211; she said situation. You may have to go to small claims court to get your money back.</span></p></blockquote>

But before you sign the dotted line, there are some things you should be aware of about renting a car. A lawsuit claims overcharges by Dollar Rent A Car. The confusion is over something called the collision damage waiver. The suit goes on to claim that even though customers state clearly they don’t want the pricey option to have the rental car company cover potential damage, they’re being charged nearly $25 a day anyway. In an email to the I-Team, the company denies those allegations and says they intend to fight them vigorously.</span></p>

He says customers think when they sign the loss damage waiver, they’re saying no they don’t want the coverage when in fact they are saying yes. What do you do if you believe you’ve been charged for an add-on that you didn’t want? You should go straight to the rental car company and ask for your money back, and report it to your credit card company — although in this case you may not have much luck. If the system shows your signature of approval, the credit card company might not get involved in a he said – she said situation. You may have to go to small claims court to get your money back.</span></p></blockquote>

When she went to pick up a rental car, she would have to decide whether to buy the insurance.   Before her most recent trip last spring, she learned that she was covered through her personal auto policy and her credit card. So she made sure the Dollar Rent a Car clerk with the friendly, back-home demeanor knew she did not want any coverage. “She went back to her big screen, which I could not see, and she clickety-clickety-clicked,” said Ms. McKinnon, a 66-year-old retired nurse practitioner. Then, as the clerk instructed, Ms. McKinnon signed her name on the electronic tablet.</span></p>
<p itemprop="articleBody"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">But 15 days later, when she returned the silver <a title="" href="http://autos.nytimes.com/2011/Ford/Focus/245/2790/326443/researchOverview.aspx?inline=nyt-classifier">Ford Focus</a>, Ms. McKinnon said she was handed a bill for $944, nearly twice what she expected to pay. She was charged an extra $23.95 a day for the <a href="http://carinsurance.about.com/od/CarRentalGlossary/g/Collision-Damage-Waiver-Cdw-Or-Loss-Damage-Waiver-Ldw.htm">loss damage waiver</a>, an option that isn’t technically <a href="http://www.dollar.com/%CB%9C/media/dollar/files/corporateroadmap/dolpeaceofmindbroc.ashx">insurance</a>, but that generally “waives” the renter’s responsibility for loss or damage to the vehicle.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Consumers allege that Dollar Rent A Car / Thrifty Car Rental overcharges renters with hidden fees. According to consumers, Dollar/ Thrifty employees get consumers to sign a pad for optional insurance even after consumers state they the decline coverage The added costs can amount to up to $50 a day on top of the rental charge. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Consumers assume that since they have told the agent they decline the insurance, that any signatures would reflect that. However, consumers have reported that what they are signing does not correspond to what the agents are telling them.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Consumers allege that when they return cars and check out they find hundreds of dollars in insurance charges tacked on.</span></p>
