John Mattes is a litigator and investigative journalist recognized for his work protecting consumers and exposing fraud and corruption. He has won five Emmy Awards, a Golden Mike Award, an Edward R. Murrow Award, and ten Press Club Awards.
As of September of 2016, Mattes has transitioned the focus of his work to the Russian interference in the presidential election. Mattes’s findings indicate that Russia targetted social media platforms of Bernie Sanders supporters with anti-Hillary Clinton propaganda in order to breakdown support for the Democratic candidate. Mattes’s investigation has been covered by numerous national news networks, including The New Yorker, The Huffington Post, and The Rachel Maddow Show. Mattes began his career as a politician in Madison, Wisconsin, serving as a Dane County Supervisor and Madison City Council Member. While in Madison, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Communication Research.
He then went on to Miami, Florida, where he obtained a law degree from the University of Miami. He first worked as a Public Defender, and then in private practice as a public policy litigator.
As an attorney, Mattes helped expose the cloak-and-dagger events of the Iran-Contra scandal. In the course of legal discovery in a Contra gun-running case, Mattes obtained previously classified documents that he turned over to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and its Subcommittee on Terrorism, Narcotics, and International Communications, headed by Senator John Kerry (D-Mass). These materials helped provide the basis for The Kerry Report, which to date remains the most extensive inquiry into the Contra-CIA-drug connection.
Mattes subsequently became an Investigative Counsel to the United States Senate POW Committee. Based on his Senate work, Mattes investigated and litigated on behalf of the Lost Army Commandos, a group of CIA assets left behind in Communist prisons for 25 years. His case ended with the Commandos, for the first time, being acknowledged for their service, and compensated for their decades in prison.
While in Miami, Mattes served as an Investigative Consultant for ABC World News I-Team. He then became an investigative reporter for the newly-launched TV station WAMI in Miami. He next worked as an investigative reporter for the nationally syndicated Uncovered TV in Los Angeles. He subsequently moved to San Diego and worked at Fox-6 News as an investigative reporter from 2002 until 2009.
Mattes founded InvestigativeGuy.com, an online site dedicated to defending consumers and exposing frauds and scams. John Mattes/Investigative Guy investigations have uncovered health insurance scams, banking swindles, and mortgage modification schemes, leading to law enforcement action against a number of the con men.
